The European elections took place in the 27 member states of the Union from 6 to 9 June 2024. The turnout was 50.93 per cent, slightly higher than five years ago and the highest of the past three decades. Still, this also means that only half of the European citizens went to the polls. There were countries, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, where the participation amounted to 30 per cent or even less. The European parties entered the campaign with top candidates and carefully drafted manifestos. The PES Congress in Rome elected Nicolas Schmit, who worked tirelessly, visited more than 40 cities across the Union, successfully fought in the Eurovision debates and rallied countless activists and sympathisers, promoting the electoral platform "The Europe we want โ social, democratic, sustainable". Despite the very pessimistic prognosis at the beginning of the year, the result brought 135 MEPs out of 720. As such, it is among the factors that potentially enable the retention of the pro-European mainstream coalition in the European Parliament. As the last ballots have been counted, a new political chapter opens with the negotiations for the top posts and the agenda that will guide the legislative period 2024-2029. This is where the dynamics are expected to be very different from the past since the results of the votes in the individual member states brought up some tectonic shifts. The social democratic family clearly set some of its red lines, among which the key one is no cooperation with the radical right. While this process will take another three months, it is yet to be seen how the challenges โ such as the evident polarisation, a surge of the radical right and the larger-than-ever representation of centrifugal forces both in the EP and in the Council โ shall translate. To identify some trends and some potential trajectories, FEPS is publishing this special edition of the EPO, which includes analyses by experts from all the 27 member states and an outlook of the observations drawn on the EU level.

Just after the EU Elections, Matthias Ecke, MEP of the S&D Group, evaluates the progressive's campaign, considering the outcomes and potential strategies for success in the future to halt the growth of right-wing radicals, and safeguard politics from aggression. Together with FEPS Director of Research and Training Ania Skrzypek, they are searching for ways to refocus citizens' attention on the key progressive proposals that benefit all.

This Analytical Conference, which is a part of the Next Left Research Programme, brought together leading pollsters and political analysts to discuss the dynamics of the upcoming European elections. Keynote speakers included MEP Andreas Schieder and FEPS Secretary General, Lรกszlรณ Andor, who set the stage for an in-depth analysis of the rise of the far right, demographic voting trends, and the impact of national issues on the European campaign. Presentations covered country-specific insights from Italy, France, the Netherlands, and Sweden, highlighting shifts in voter behaviour, polarisation, and the influence of socio-economic issues. The conference emphasised the need for progressive narratives and practical solutions to address the poly-crises facing Europe, aiming to engage frustrated voters and counter the appeal of extremist parties.
